Our guide will explain to you about the myths, the meaning and the history of Ancient Olympia. This sanctuary of ancient Greece, is well known for having been the site of the Olympic Games in classical times.

Ancient Olympia is the birthplace of the Olympic Games which started on these very grounds in the year 776 BCE and therefore the ancient Greeks measured time back to the centuries by referring to the different Olympic Games.

Important monuments and sites that we will visit during the guided tour in the archaeological site of Ancient Olympia are:

The temple of Hera

Temple of Hera (or Heraion/Heraeum), the Temple of Zeus, the Pelopion – the funerary monument in honor of King Pelops, the stadium and the hippodrome, the Prytaneion and the Philippeion, as well as the array of treasuries representing the various city states.

The Metroon, the Echo Stoa, the Bouleuterion, the Palaestra, the workshop of Pheidias, the Gymnasion and the Leonidaion.

Olympia is also well known for the gigantic gold and ivory statue of Zeus that used to stand in the temple, sculpted by Pheidias, which was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by Antipater of Sidon. The ancient ruins sit north of the Alfeios River and Mount Kronos (named after the Greek deity Kronos).

In Olympia museum we will see many of the exhibits concerning statues and findings from the archaeological site of Olympia, like sculpture tools, the personal cup of Pheidias with his name at the bottom and many others.

After the guided tour you will have free time to scroll around in the center of village of Olympia.

Afterwards we will drive you back to the cruise ship at Katakolon port.
