Our guide will introduce you Ancient Olympia. Ancient Olympia, known as the Altis, includes the oldest stone temple in Greece, the Temple of Hera (or Heraion/Heraeum) and the Temple of Zeus, the Pelopion – the funerary monument in honor of King Pelops, according to a myth he was the one who organized the first games and for that reason he became famous and gave his name to Peloponnese (Pelop’s Island) – and the area of the altar, where the sacrifices were made.

The Olympic Games

Ancient Olympia is the birthplace of the Olympic Games which started on these very grounds. In the year 776 BCE the first Olympiad took place at the sanctuary of Zeus and repeated every four years for centuries thereafter.
